Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder, one of several types of personality disorders, is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.

What Causes Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

The causes aren’t well understood. However, inherited genetic defects are thought to be responsible for many cases of NPD. Contributing environmental factors may include:

  • childhood abuse or neglect
  • excessive parental pampering
  • unrealistic expectations from parents
  • sexual promiscuity (often accompanies narcissism)
  • cultural influences
